Chickens

Visit the free range chickens and ducks behind Park End on the north side of the village street.  If you are staying in “Lion House”, cross the road, go through the gates between South Lodge and Park End, bear left behind the garage to the 5 bar gate.

Please do not go in with them unaccompanied as the cockerel dislikes intruders and will defend his flock vigorously which can be quite scary.

Visitors are welcome to go up to the gate and they will come running up to you for small quantities of kitchen scraps (bread, greens, particularly cooked veg. pasta and rice but no meat please). Eggs, when available, can be bought for £1 for ½ doz.

We started with 4 chickens in Jan. 2005 (Eagle, Blue, Jet and Ickie) and then bought what we thought were 2 Sussex hens (Ice and Lemon). One of these turned out to be a cockerel (Cocky). His first three Sussex chicks with Lemon were born May 05. He also fathered many chicks by Jet and Blue. Jet has brooded many of the eggs laid by the other hens over the last 2 years.

Early in 2006 we were given 2 runner ducks and they have now expanded to 6. The new 2007 ducklings are doing fine see picture below. At the moment they are inside to keep warm and will be out with the others when they are older.
